The European Union (EU) has set ambitious climate targets to reach in the span of the next 30 years, including a collective net greenhouse gas emissions reduction target of at least 55% by 2030 (compared to 1990 levels) and the objective of a climate neutral Europe by 2050. The EU decarbonisation process can have significant positive side effects externally, including in the European neighbourhood. However, to produce win-win outcomes, equity should be kept at the forefront of climate cooperation through both diplomatic efforts and technical and financial assistance. European instruments such as the Carbon Border Ad justment Mechanism (CBAM) and the EU’s Green Taxonomy are a case in point.
